How do we depict spaces we can't see?

I am creating a series of 12 spatial abstractions that represent indoor spaces I feel unable to move freely in, controlled by, or confined in. They will all be different sizes and correlate to one another when they are installed and hung on the wall. My inspiration is rooted in our natural habit to fill in spaces we can't see - to essentially see the whole picture even when it isn't provided.
